Post-Operative Physiotherapy – Benefits for Your Recovery

19/03/2022

Around 28.3 million orthopaedic surgeries are expected to be performed worldwide in 2022. Whether you have undergone a surgical procedure or know someone who has, you would have some idea of the challenges experienced throughout the post-op recovery stage. Physiotherapy can be a significant benefit for recovery; helping to relieve pain, strengthen muscles, improve range of motion and get you back to your usual routine safely and efficiently. If you are anticipating or recently undergone an orthopaedic operation affecting the knee, rotator cuff, hips or other area of the body, it’s well worth considering post-operative physiotherapy to support your recovery.

How Post-Operative Physiotherapy can Help

Orthosports Physiotherapy have a wealth of experience in post-operative rehabilitation. Drawing on 20+ years of experience, we are here to support patients from the initial stages of injury management through to recovery.

No two injuries are the same, and recovery times will depend on the type of surgery you have undergone. Post-operative physiotherapy can begin whilst in the hospital and continue upon discharge until the recovery process is complete.

In the hospital, physiotherapists can help by:

  • Supplying crutches and other aids to support your recovery
  • Teaching you how to use assistive devices to support you in regaining your independence
  • Supplying you with a list of appropriate exercises

Upon discharge from hospital, the recovery process can commence. You can expect to complete anywhere from a few weeks to many months of physiotherapy before you can return to your usual routine.

Your physiotherapist can assist with the following:

  • Activity Modification – shortly after your operation, it is important to allow plenty of time for rest. Due to pain and inflammation, it can be difficult to perform everyday activities such as getting dressed, entering/exiting vehicles and going to the bathroom. Activity modification is an important part of the recovery process. Your physiotherapist will advise accordingly, adjusting your routines, showing you how to perform activities safely and providing additional aids where necessary.
