Knee pain is a common complaint. It affects people of all ages. It may be the result of injury, overuse, ageing and genetic factors. Very often the pain comes from changes that occur in the joint lining, for example, arthritis or ligament tears that occur as a result of injury.
Occasionally knee pain can come from conditions such as Gout and rarely infection.
When you presented to our clinic for assessment we often look for the following
- Redness and warmth to the touch
- Weakness or instability
- Popping or crunching noises
- “Locking” or inability to fully straighten the knee
- Can’t bear weight on your knee
- Have marked knee swelling
- Are unable to fully extend or flex your knee
- Have a fever, in addition to redness, pain and swelling in your knee
- Fall because your knee “gives way “
After your assessment, a management plan would be arranged for you. Very often you will be instructed in a home exercise program that aims to improve strength and/or flexibility. If the examination indicates a significant issue within your knee, then very often you will need to see an orthopaedic surgeon to arrange an MRI of your knee. As a patient of how clinic, we are often able to fast track your access to specialist care if required.
If the MRI indicates a significant issue, then the surgeon may recommend a surgical option. Most knee complaint that we see, do not require surgery.
Please review the following Knee page from the Orthosports web site (click here). It contains information regarding various injuries, operative animations which in a friendly way, will show you the anatomy as well as some of the surgical procedures that are available.
